Forty years of answering the phone.
Mentz & Kie was registered in Ermelo in 1983, the year Hein qualified. We've been in the same town, doing the same careful work, ever since.
Started by Hein. Still run by Hein.
Hein Mentz qualified as a chartered accountant in 1983 and opened the practice the same year. Forty years later, he's still here, still signing off the same clients' financials — and many of their children's.
The firm grew slowly and deliberately. Morné joined in 2009; Ilse in 2011. Today we look after just over 300 owner-run businesses across Mpumalanga — farmers, builders, retailers, transport operators, and the families behind them.
We've turned down work that would have made us bigger but worse. We're not interested in being the biggest firm in Mpumalanga. We're interested in being the one our clients keep.
The & isn't decoration. It means you and us — a partnership, not a faceless firm. Your accountant should know your business as well as you do. That takes the kind of relationship you can’t rush.— Hein Mentz
Three people. Decades of memory.
Hein Mentz
40 years in practice. Started the firm in 1983. Handles the longest-standing clients and the trickiest SARS objections.
Morné de Beer
Joined in 2009. Runs the farming and agri practice. Knows what VAT on animal feed actually costs you.
Ilse Coetzee
Joined in 2011. Heads up payroll, VAT and the monthly rhythm. The person most of our clients speak to first.
Four rules we won't break.
Answer the phone.
If a client calls before 4pm, they speak to one of us the same day. Not a portal. Not a ticket. A person who already knows their books.
Say it plainly.
If we can't explain a tax decision in a sentence the owner understands, we haven't finished thinking. Jargon hides bad advice.
Grow slowly.
We only take on clients we can give proper attention to. If we don't have capacity, we say so and recommend someone who does.
Stay in Ermelo.
We're not opening a Sandton branch. The reason our advice is good is that we live in the same town as the businesses we look after.
